If you feel like you’re working hard in your myofunctional therapy business but not seeing results yet, you’re not alone.
Most therapists don’t struggle because they lack motivation or intelligence.
They struggle because they are working on the wrong things at the wrong time – and they don’t have a clear roadmap or framework to follow. (Hint – you totally get this inside our programs.)
One of the biggest misunderstandings about starting a myofunctional therapy business is believing that everything matters equally from day one.
It doesn’t.
Businesses grow in stages.
Understanding the stages of a myofunctional therapy business helps you know exactly what to focus on so you stop wasting time on the wrong tasks.
And each stage requires different skills (I like to call them CEO crowns 👑), different priorities, and a completely different use of your time.
When you understand what stage you’re in, clarity replaces overwhelm almost immediately.

Why Therapists Struggle During the Stages of a Myofunctional Therapy Business
Many hygienists complete their career change from dental hygiene – hang their “open for business” sign up and expect clients to come running. (This is not Field of Dreams, folks)
When that doesn’t happen, they start doing everything at once:
- posting randomly on social media
- doubting themselves
- lower their prices
- enroll in another course
It feels productive.
But it creates chaos.
Without understanding business stages, effort becomes scattered instead of strategic.

The Stages of a Myofunctional Therapy Business Explained
Understanding the stages of a myofunctional therapy business helps therapists focus on the right priorities at the right time instead of trying to grow in every direction at once.
The Four Business Stages
- Setup Stage
- Planning Stage
- Building Stage
- Scaling Stage
Most myofunctional therapists are operating somewhere between setup and building — even if they believe they should already be scaling.
Let’s walk through what actually belongs in each stage.
Stage 1 — Setup: Build Your Foundation First
The setup stage is short but essential.
Your focus here is readiness, not growth.
What to Focus on During Setup
- Developing confidence in your clinical skills
- Completing myofunctional therapy education
- Establishing your business legally – LLC? Insurance
- Opening bank accounts
Your goal is simply to become prepared to serve clients professionally and safely.
Stage 2 — Planning: Decide What You Sell and Who You Help
This is the stage many therapists rush through — and where most long-term problems begin.
Planning is about clarity.
You must answer two critical questions:
Who do I help?
What transformation do I provide?
Without these answers, marketing becomes noise.
Define Your Ideal Client
You cannot market effectively if you are trying to help everyone.
A middle-aged woman struggling with fatigue will respond to very different messaging than a parent searching for help for their child.
Clarity allows your audience to recognize themselves in your message.
Create an Irresistible Offer
Your offer is more than pricing.
It includes:
- your unique myofunctional therapy experience
- what the client journey looks like
- the transformation you promise
- the results clients can expect
The goal is differentiation, not competition.
You are not a commodity. Don’t be wheat. Or corn.
Choose One Primary Marketing Platform
During planning, you are not trying to be everywhere.
You are choosing one consistent marketing channel such as:
- a blog
- a podcast
- YouTube
- long-form educational content
Long-form content builds trust and continues working long after it is published.
Build a Simple Marketing Plan
Your marketing should follow a clear structure:
Problem → Education → Solution
This plan becomes the roadmap you execute during the next stage. Don’t get too caught up in this just yet – inside the Profitable Myofunctional Therapist™ program we help you get all of this taken care of. Just for now know this – random reels on Instagram isn’t gonna get you where you want to go. Creating a simple marketing plan that is something you can – and will – do consistently is key. The Google wizards frown upon you posting ‘n ghosting. In fact, it will work against the growth of your business.
Stage 3 — Building: Where Real Business Growth Happens
Building is where execution replaces preparation.
This is the stage where most therapists either gain momentum or remain stuck.
Marketing Becomes a Daily Activity
You are now implementing the plan you created.
This means:
- publishing consistently (did you see what I said above?)
- educating your audience – provide value! provide value! provide value!
- inviting conversations
- developing marketing skills as needed (this means invest in whatever it takes to get your proficient at this skill – yes, business takes money – especially if you want a particular outcome.)
Consistency matters more than perfection.
Selling Is Simply Helping
Selling is often the most uncomfortable skill for myofunctional therapists.
But selling is not pressure.
It is inviting someone into a conversation where you help solve a problem. If they are already consuming your content (aka: free value) then they’ve already raised their hand and said “hey, I need some help here!”.
Key conversions include:
- conversation → free assessment
- free assessment → comprehensive exam
- comprehensive exam → paying client
Each step builds trust and confidence.
Client Fulfillment Drives Growth
Delivering excellent results becomes your strongest marketing tool. And its free advertising.
Satisfied clients lead to:
- testimonials
- reviews
- referrals
- getting noticed by the doctors that you refer to
Exceptional outcomes create organic growth.
Operations Develop Through Repetition
Systems and automation should evolve naturally.
You cannot build perfect systems before you have real client experience.
Early operations should stay simple while you learn what actually works.
What NOT to Focus on Too Early
One of the biggest mistakes therapists make is over-engineering their business.
Creating complex workflows, detailed SOPs, or automation too early often becomes procrastination disguised as productivity.
You cannot systemize something you have not repeated enough times to understand.
Growth activities must come first.

How to Allocate Your Time Based on Your Stage
Once you know your stage, your calendar becomes clearer.
If you are in the building stage, most of your time should be spent on growth activities.
Example Time Allocation for Early Business Growth
- 70–90% marketing and conversations
- some client fulfillment
- minimal “back office” operational work
Your schedule should reflect activities that create clients and revenue.
Consistency beats intensity every time.
Why Understanding Business Stages Reduces Overwhelm
When you understand business stages, decision-making becomes simpler.
Understanding the stages of a myofunctional therapy business gives you a clear framework so you know exactly where to focus your time and energy.
Instead of asking:
What should I work on today?
You begin asking:
What does this stage require?
That shift reduces procrastination, imposter syndrome, and scattered effort.
Clarity creates momentum.
