How Long Does Myofunctional Therapy Training Take?

Getting Started

How long does myofunctional therapy training take? As long as your pace makes it, and LMT60 (Learn Myofunctional Therapy in 60 Days) is built as a sixty day program. Getting to steady paying clients is a separate stretch with no fixed date, because it depends on your market, your effort, your offer, and your follow-through. Anyone who hands you a number for that part is guessing or selling.

I started seeing clients in January 2017, and my first paying client came in May. Those four months taught me more about timelines than my training did, because the training had a finish line and that stretch did not.

When someone asks me how long myofunctional therapy training takes, I know that’s rarely the whole question. She wants to know how long until money comes in, how long she has to keep her hygiene days, and whether this is something she can fit around her life or something that takes her life first.

So I split the answer into the two parts it has. Treating them as one number is how people end up angry at a timeline nobody promised them.

How long does myofunctional therapy training take? Graphic showing the three parts: the training, the confidence gap, and the business.

Part one: the training, which has a real answer

LMT60 is my clinical training, built as sixty days and self-paced online. It has six modules and more than 30 lessons covering an introduction to orofacial myofunctional therapy, airway and orthodontics, tongue ties, sleep and breathing, and the therapy itself.

Because you set the pace, your real number depends on your clinical days, your family, and how many evenings you give it. Nobody grades you on speed.

How long do you want your 60 days to take? I’ve had students do it in 30 days (hello go-getter!) and some take much longer (hello make excuses + no boundaries). The entire goal is to get your “prototype” (aka first client) so you can watch the whole process unfold. It’s during that time – working with your first customer – that you get to test out your systems and improve along the way.

Part two: the confidence gap, where the time goes

I knew how to treat a tongue long before I knew how to ask a stranger to pay me for it. I started my training in January 2017 and my first paying client came in May, and no lesson could close the confidence gap between them for me.

The training has a finish line. The confidence doesn’t.

The gap closes with cases. The gap closes with reps. The gap closes with implementing. The gap closes with having conversations and getting your feet wet. Your first full assessment will probably take longer than it should, you may write the report and rewrite it, and you’ll second-guess what you saw. Then one day you’ll finish a case without reaching for your notes, and that’s the day it starts to turn.

I talk to women three years out from their training who never had a single client, and the training was never what held them back. Perfectionism is procrastination wearing a nicer outfit. It usually get’s called “low confidence” but that’s just an RDH being scared to do something imperfectly! The perfectionism is alive and real for “us Type-A ladies” for sure!

How long does myofunctional therapy training take? Quote card reading: The training has a finish line. The confidence doesn't.

Part three: the business, which is its own build

Clinical competence and a working practice are separate projects. You can know the therapy cold and still have no idea where clients come from.

A 2025 study in the Journal of Dental Hygiene named business management among the five core themes for hygienists practicing myofunctional therapy, so this isn’t only my opinion about my own students. I lay out the order in your first 60 days of building a practice.

How long the business part takes depends on your market, your effort, your offer, your consistency, and your follow-through. I won’t put a date on it, and the people who will are the reason this field has a trust problem.

Why nobody can give you a credential timeline

If you came here looking for how many weeks until a specific credential, the answer is that the field doesn’t have one standard to count toward. Different organizations hold different positions on what qualifies someone, and the same 2025 study named uniform credentialing as one of its five core themes.

That isn’t me dodging the question. It’s the state of the profession right now, so I teach training and I say trained, because that’s what is true. You complete clinical training, you build skill, and you do the work.

The clock you aren’t counting

While you run these numbers, another clock is running. A 2011 survey of ADHA members in North Carolina and California found that 76.5 percent of respondents reported chronic musculoskeletal pain, and 36.4 percent of those had considered a career change.

A 2022 survey of 468 Italian dental hygienists found that 91 percent reported suffering or having suffered a musculoskeletal disorder. I’m not telling you that to scare you into buying something. I’m telling you because the question about how long this takes only makes sense next to how long the other thing lasts.

Friend, the training has a finish line you can see, and the clock on your body doesn’t, and it has been running the whole time you’ve been in the op.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does myofunctional therapy training take?

LMT60 is built as a sixty day clinical training, and because it’s self-paced, your own schedule sets the real number. Reaching steady client work is a separate stretch that varies with your market, your effort, your offer, and your follow-through. Here’s what the training covers.

How long until I can see my first paying myofunctional therapy client?

There’s no fixed answer. My first client came in January 2017 and my first paying client came in May, and that’s one story and not a forecast. How quickly clients follow depends on your market and the business you build around the skill, which is a separate project from the training. If you want help working out your own next step, you can book a Get Unstuck Call.

Is myofunctional therapy training a two-year program?

LMT60 isn’t. It’s self-paced online training built as sixty days. Other programs set their own length, so check each one’s syllabus and teacher before you enroll, and I wrote up how I’d vet a myofunctional therapist course if you want a checklist.

Can I complete myofunctional therapy training while working full time?

LMT60 is self-paced online training, so you can fit it around your own schedule. Whether you keep your clinical hours while you train is your decision, and it depends on your finances and your energy. If you want to hear how others paced it, the community is here.

How long does it take to get a myofunctional therapy credential?

The field doesn’t have one uniform standard to count toward, and a 2025 study of hygienists in this work named uniform credentialing among its five core themes. I teach clinical training and I say trained, because that’s what it is. Here’s what people mean when they go looking for a credential.
