Comfortable Doesn’t Build a Business — Desperate Does

CEO

I was smoking in a parking lot before I even clocked in for my hygiene shift. Not on the drive home anymore, where nobody would ever know. On the drive there. I had heart palpitations three mornings a week, and I remember thinking it was going to kill me. Long term, it probably would have. But what was actually killing me was staying comfortable in a job that had turned me into someone I did not recognize.

That is not a breakdown story. That is a desperation story, and desperation is exactly what got me out.

Comfort Has Consequences

Every month you stay comfortable inside your dental hygiene paycheck, your business stays exactly where it is parked. I hear from so many of you who are complaining about the results you have, and when I ask what effort you have actually put in past finishing the training, the honest answer is not much. That safety net is not a problem because it pays you. It is a problem because it lets you tolerate a business that is not moving, and it never gets uncomfortable enough to force a change.

Desperation Is Not the Same as Crisis

I want to be clear about this because it matters. I was not broke when I decided to leave hygiene. I was desperate to stop becoming a woman I did not like and barely recognized. That distinction matters for you too. You do not have to wait until you are in financial ruin before you decide enough is enough. I set a five year goal to leave dental hygiene, and I ended up doing it in thirteen months, because the moment I got honest about the real cost of staying, waiting stopped making sense. Start now, on your own terms, and you control the gas and the brake. Wait until it becomes a crisis, and the crisis controls you.

The Safety Net Is the Villain

Your dental hygiene paycheck gives you just enough to tolerate the failure. It gives you just enough to tolerate how uncomfortable you are without ever forcing you to fix it. I have watched this pattern with student after student. When someone is looking at closing their business and we pull that safety net out from under them, they figure out exactly how fast they need to move. They learn to fly on the way down, because there is no other option left.

Training Was Never the Missing Piece

Many of you are complaining about your results without being honest about your effort. You have the training. The real question is whether you have actually done the work the training was supposed to lead to, or whether you have been waiting for the moment you feel ready enough to start. Comfort tells you that you need more time, more clarity, more confidence before you build this. The truth is you do not need permission to move. You need a reason you cannot ignore.

Storm the Island and Burn the Boats

If this is landing on you, and you are trained and still using your hygiene paycheck as your safety net, here is the mindset shift. Storm the island and burn the boats. If you have a plan B, you are not serious about plan A. That does not mean you have to quit hygiene tomorrow. It might mean cutting your hours, finding something part time, or setting a real deadline instead of an open ended someday. It means deciding, on purpose, that staying comfortable is no longer an option.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do trained myofunctional therapists stay stuck instead of building their business?

Most trained therapists are not stuck because they lack clinical skill. They are stuck because their dental hygiene paycheck gives them just enough comfort to tolerate a business that is not moving. Comfort, not a lack of training, is the real barrier.

What is the difference between desperation and a financial crisis?

Desperation is the clarity that staying where you are costs you more than moving forward. It does not require financial ruin. I made my decision to leave hygiene while I was still employed and financially stable, because I was desperate to stop becoming someone I did not recognize, not because I was broke.

Do I have to quit my dental hygiene job to build my myofunctional therapy business?

No. The goal is not necessarily to quit tomorrow. It is to stop treating your hygiene paycheck as a permanent safety net that lets you avoid the consistent work your business actually needs.

I already finished my myofunctional therapy training. Why haven’t I gotten clients yet?

Training gives you clinical skill. It does not automatically give you a business. If you have not put in the effort on the marketing, structure, and consistent follow-through your business needs, the gap is not your training. It is what you have done with it since.
